YNW Beginnings

Youth for a New World was founded by Mike Seymour in Fall, 2004 after launching the AfricaAmericaExchange-which came out of the partnership between Mike and his Burundian colleague and friend, Prosper Ndabishuriye. Prosper is founder and General Coordinator of Youth in Reconstruction of a World in Destruction, a Burundian non-governmental peace-making organization begun in 1994 by bringing former Hutu and Tutsi antagonists together to reconcile and forgive through rebuilding homes and learning to live together.

Their synchronistic meeting at a conference on Whidbey Island in Fall 2003, their broad vision for peace in Burundi, Africa and the world and the call to work with young people brought both Mike and Prosper to recognize a divine appointment in their meeting and working together.

Philosophy

YNW believes in an integral approach to education involving head, heart and hands. and This is with the belief that many of the world's problems stem from an atomistic worldview in society and in our schools that separates young people from individual purpose and meaning, a sense of community and civic engagement locally and globally, as well as respect and care for the whole community of life.

Our integral philosophy is realized through programs that promote awareness, caring and action. Multicultural education expands the world of a young person by introducing them to the history, geography, culture, needs and beauty of other peoples both different from and similar to themselves. We strengthen connection and compassion by linking youth through schools and other organizations in joint study and projects. All our projects incorporate an action component in the form of service either to the local or global community.
